“Dad, Why Don’t You Use Me As Your Poster Child?”
Tila Terry Cullifer
On January 28, 2024, my oldest daughter, Tila Marie Terry Cullifer went to be with the Lord after unexplained heart failure.
Tila was hard core pro-life, and excited about this campaign. While I was working on one of our TV ads, I sought Tila’s input on the ad. She said to me: “Dad, why don’t you use me as your poster child?”
In honor of Tila’s request – and her fierce pro-life commitment – I invite you to support our campaign. Here is her story, and why she urged me to tell it.
In October 1984, I was standing in front of an abortion clinic in Binghamton NY. A woman approached on foot; I asked if she was there for an abortion. She cussed like an angry sailor. I said, “I’m sorry for making you upset…I know this is awkward…is there anything I can do to help you?”
She froze in her tracks, asking, “Did you say you would help me?” “Yes.” I said. She said, “I prayed this morning, ‘God, If you don’t want me to have this abortion, you’ve got to send someone to help me.’” I told her, “I’m here in answer to your prayers.” We left together… with Tila alive.
When Tila was born, I was with her mom in the hospital room. Eventually, we adopted Tila and her brother. She was a princess. She loved, she danced and played the flute, she was a joy to be with, and she saved lives. One of her last entries in her journal was, “I know my heavenly Father loves me.”
“Dad, Why Don’t You Use Me As Your Poster Child?”
A couple days before her heart failure, we talked on the phone and brainstormed about my campaign for President. She knew our plan was to run TV ads defending babies. She was enthusiastically supportive.
Tila knew her story. She’d say, “Dad, me and my beautiful children are here because you saved me.” She was unflinching against abortion, and wanted her story told in this campaign. In my last conversation with her two days before her heart failure she again said: “Use me as your poster child.” I’m honoring her wish.
After her heart failure, I flew to South Carolina to be with her. After multiple exams and an MRI, it became clear that unless there was a miracle, Tila would not survive. We pled with the Lord for a miracle, but He chose to take her. She was His.
Just before she left this life, she opened her eyes, and looked right into mine. She stared at me. I told her we loved her, and that if she wanted to go, she could go. She looked at me a few moments more, then closed her eyes, and slipped peacefully out of this life, into the next. I could feel her soul leave. The whole experience was “other.”
I was with her when she came into this world, and with her when she left. I write this through tears of anguish: “The Lord hath given; the Lord hath taken away. Blessed be the name of the Lord.” May she rest in peace, and even now help save other little boys and girls from abortion.
